7 Top Attractions of Beijing

All of the exotic splendor of the Far East is alive and well in China’s capital. After the fervor of the summer of 2008, the city’ revamped, refurbished face is available to tourists. Ancient history lives in the sights of Beijing.
1. The Great Wall
One of the Seven Wonders of the World waits in Beijing. Indeed, it is often the reason people travel here. A hike here, no matter how many other tourists are there, is well worth it. Be aware that this is no simple stroll. Large staircases must be climbed, onto the wall and between the platforms that punctuate a walk on the wall.

2. Forbidden City
Like many of Beijing’s attractions, the Forbidden City was built during the Ming Dynasty, beginning in the 15th century. The emperors enjoyed not just a palace here, but an entire city, closed off to everyone not connected to the imperial household. Get a headset for a self-guided audio tour.

3. Purple Bamboo Garden
Its namesake might also be called Black Bamboo garden; the black being the most profuse of the many varieties of Bamboo growing here. Lakes, bridges, islands and pavilions make up the Garden.

4. Tiananmen Square
This is a place of revolution. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty, it has now become the seat of Mao’s revolution. Foreign visitors will, of course, remember this as the site of the 1989 massacre. Locals may not even know about the event. The heavy security provides silent commemoration, and testimony to the oppressive regime still in power here.

5. Peking Duck
Foodies cannot leave without getting a quintessential taste of Beijing. This classic dish can be found from the top restaurants to homely family places. Peking duck is an elaborately basted, fire-roasted bird.

6. Bei Hai Park
Take a walk here to conjure up the time of Kublai Khan. Lotus blooms decorate the waters here, surrounding the White Dagoba on its Jade Islet.

7. Temple of Heaven
Another remnant of the Ming Dynasty, the Temple of Heaven was a prayer place for emperors. Among other curiosities here, the Echo Wall allows any sound to be heard along its entire length.

A visit to Beijing means immersion in a land of ancients. A visitor can see astounding sights, sample traditional cuisine, and walk in the footsteps of emperors.
